Medial geniculate nucleus – auditory sensory information through connections of primary and association auditory cortices, likely plays a role in simple and higher-level auditory processes

Lateral geniculate nucleus – visual sensory information through primary and secondary visual cortices

Ventroposterior nuclear group

  • Lateral – somatosensory body and limbs
  • Medial – somatosensory head and neck
  • Medial, parvicellular – gustatory
  • Inferior – connections with rostral inferior parietal lobule and second somatosensory area in parietal operculum, also implicated in vestibular functions
