Limbic nuclei are involved in mood and motivation (Schmahmann 2003).


Anterior nuclear group (anterior dorsal, anteromedial, anteroventral), lateral dorsal nucleus – learning, memory, emotional experience, emotional expression, drive, motivation

  • Mammillothalamic tract and ventral amygdalothalamic tract pass through the anterior thalamus and link limbic nuclei with other limbic regions (cingulate, hippocampus, parahippocampus, entorhinal cortex, retrosplenial cortex, orbitofrontal, medial prefrontal cortices, subcortical structures including mammillary bodies and amygdala


Other: medial dorsal (magnocellular part), medial pulvinar, ventral anterior
