Neuropathology in early-onset Alzheimer dementia:

  • In non-amnestic phenotypic variants of EOAD (e.g., executive- or spatial-dominant), there is more likely hippocampal sparing with increased neocortical tau pathology, particularly in parietal and to a lesser extent frontal cortex
  • Tau and neurofibrillary tangle deposition correspond to deficits in EOAD more so than do amyloid-β1-42 and neuritic plaques
  • Lewy bodies are a frequent finding in familial Alzheimer disease
