Long Association Fibers of the Cerebral Cortex

  • Long association fibers of the cerebral cortex (linking cortical areas within the same hemisphere) (Schmahmann et al, 2007; Schmahmann and Pandya, 2008).
  • Cingulum bundle: not a singular pathway, has both short and long sagittal association fibers; white matter of dorsal cingulate gyrus radiates to interlink medial parts of frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes, as well as subcortical structures; it is part of the Papez circuit (Bubb, Metzler-Baddeley, and Aggleton, 2018).
  • Uncinate fasciculus: white matter of rostral temporal lobe, anterior / inferior insula <-> white matter of orbital and medial prefrontal cortex
  • Extreme capsule: white matter between claustrum and insula white matter <-> white matter between claustrum and orbitofrontal cortex
  • Arcuate fasciculus: white matter of superior temporal gyrus <-> inferior frontal lobe (traditionally considered connecting Broca’s and Wernicke’s area).
  • Middle longitudinal fasciculus: white matter of caudal inferior parietal lobe <-> white matter of superior temporal gyrus
  • Superior longitudinal fasciculi:
    • SLF I: white matter of superior parietal lobule <-> white matter of superior frontal gyrus
    • SLF II: centrum semiovale <- corona radiata -> above Sylvian fissure
    • SLF III: white matter of frontal and parietal opercula
  • Inferior longitudinal fasciculus: between sagittal stratum and parieto-occipital / temporal cortices; associated with ventral visual stream
  • Fronto-occipital fasciculus: above caudate nucleus, lateral to corpus callosum, medial to corona radiata

Papez circuit (Papez 1937) Cingulate gyrus <- cingulum bundle -> parahippocampal region <-> subiculum (hippocampus) -> fornix -> mammillary bodies -> mammillothalamic tract -> anterior thalamic nuclei <- cingulum bundle -> cingulate gyrus

  • italicized font signifies tracts
